We have a large room, but one that is multifunctional; a guest room, office, craft room and now a nursery. So we liked to joke that our little one was getting a wall 😉 My husband built a murphy bed for our guest bed which really opened up the space, but we were still very limited on how much we could put into the room.

Although the room is big, there were many things that needed to be in there so the “nursery” items needed to be compact and multifunctional!

Here are the things I used and my must haves for a small nursery!

1. Mini crib

I love this mini crib from Target (not an affiliate link, just passionate about this mini crib!) We knew that we wouldn’t be able to fit a normal sized crib on her “wall” and lucky mini cribs are the new thing! We did plenty of research and many of them just felt too plain to me, but then we came across this one and we were sold. Not only does it have character with the curved head board but it also has a changing table and drawers! WIN! Or else we wouldn’t have had a dresser because there would have been no room! This bed also turns into a twin with the changing table as a side table, double win.

It was tricky finding sheets that fit the mini crib mattress (*mattress not included with crib*) and changing table pad. I emailed Da Vinci and confirmed they do not have changing pad sheets. So again I did research; this mattress protector fits perfect, these sheets (they also fit a pack and play), and these sheets for the changing table – now you’re set!

*Mom hack – layer your sheets so that it’s an easy transition when the top gets dirty!

2. Rocking chair

Okay, even though you may have a small nursery a rocking chair, or just a comfy chair, IS A MUST. Whether your nursing or formula feeding your going to be sitting…alot. Not only that but rocking your baby is such a gift! We also spend alot of time reading books and playing in our chair! If I added up all the hours I’ve spent in our rocking chair I think I would be in disbelief, so I’m not going to add them up. Just knowing that I’m thankful for the comfy chair is what matters! We got this one, and again we did our research. We wanted on that rocked and reclined….well they don’t make that combination (because rocking and reclining cant happen at the same time!! ha who knew!) But this one glides and reclines, and the reclines again as your push back. It feels like its rocking, even thought it’s gliding. And it’s super comfy, the arm rest height is prefect and the wings on the top are nice to rest your head 🙂

*Mom hack – put a thin blanket on the seat cushion so that it can be washed if it gets dirty.

3. Closet organizer

This was going to be our only clothes storage until we found the mini crib with dresser! I knew I needed to put something in the closet and with this one YOU DON’T LOOSE ANY HANGING SPACE. I was very excited. Another win, we can still hang her little clothes and store everything else! Get some bins, most fit perfectly, and you can store headbands/bows, shoes, and misc. stuff. Definitely a must for a small nursery.

*Mom hack – you can even set stuff on top!

4. Over the door organizer

I saw this once on Pinterest, and knew it needed to happen in our nursery. We conveniently have two doors in the nursery room, so I may even get another one for her toys! We use this over the door organizer (not an affiliate link) to keep her blankets, towels, burp clothes, and baby first aid stuff – clippers, thermometer, and Frida nose sucker.

*Mom hack – if you roll the blankets you can fit two in one space!

5. Under the crib containers

This is your “next size up clothes” solution. Put them under the mini crib, four fit when it’s at the highest setting! I also put diapers and wipes on top of the bins as well. The only thing that is tricky is you have to lift the crib to get to the containers, but you should only have to do it once every 3 months when you switch out clothes!

*Mom hack – put the the bin you’ll need the soonest the bottom closest to the edge to remove it easily!

6. Hatch sound machine

A sound machine is a MUST in a small, or not, so small nursery. We love the Hatch, I have a whole blog post about it here. I have some tips and tricks on this blog post about how to set up the touch settings for a perfect midnight feeding without shutting off the sound.

*Mom hack – it can be unplugged and moved anywhere in the house (we know naps can happen anywhere!)

Buy here on Amazon!

7. Wooden play gym

This is compact, light, and can be used in multiple ways. When we are not using it we can just fold it up put it against a wall or in a closet!

*Mom hack – tie some colorful ribbon for your newborn to bat at onto the wooden mobile!

8. Small bookshelf

Make room for this! Books are such a necessity for our little’s nursery! So just a small bookshelf is doable. Check out my favorite children’s books that point to Jesus!

*Mom hack – you can fit more books if you stack them instead of set them upright!

9. “Too small bag”

This is also a necessity because babies grow SOOO FAST. And I personally hated having too small things in drawer. These hampers from Amazon are the perfect size and can be hung anywhere with the hooks they come with or even on a hanger. It comes in a pack so I use the other one for a hamper. It’s a little small but honestly her clothes and blankets shouldn’t sit longer than it takes to fill this up because there’s usually always something on her clothes that shouldn’t go unwashed for longer than a few days!

*Mom hack – these fold up small and can be taken with you on vacation!

Buy the set of two here!

10. Personalized decorations

Even though you may be workin’ with a small nursery, having personalized decorations will make it more homey and make it their own! We love spending time in her nursery because it’s hers, even though it’s also the office and guest room 🙂
